BHA — Butylated Hydroxyanisole
A phenolic antioxidant that delays oxidative degradation in fats and fat-bearing feed materials. Its thermal stability preserves activity through pelleting and extrusion.
Overview
BHA is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant that terminates the autoxidation chain reaction by scavenging free radicals formed from unsaturated fatty acids. It is used in feed fats, fishmeal and vitamin premixes to delay rancidity and to protect the activity of vitamins A and E and carotenoids.
It is highly soluble in fats and organic solvents and practically insoluble in water. Its relatively high vapour pressure provides a degree of carry-through in hot processes, which makes it a preferred option in pelleted and extruded feeds.
BHA is listed as an antioxidant under the code E320 in food and feed legislation. Dosage should be set according to the target matrix, fat content and expected shelf life; it is frequently formulated together with BHT and citric acid for synergistic effect.

Regulatory note
BHA (E320) and BHT (E321) are additives defined as antioxidants in feed and food legislation. Conditions of use and maximum levels depend on the target species and product group, and are set by the applicable national legislation and the regulations of the destination country. Verifying current legislation before use is the responsibility of the user.
