TBHQ — Tertiary Butylhydroquinone
A synthetic phenolic antioxidant offering superior protection in highly unsaturated fats and fish oil. It is heat-stable, shows no carry-through effect and is also favoured in frying oils.
Overview
TBHQ is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant formed by attaching a single tert-butyl group to the hydroquinone ring. It shows notably higher protective efficiency than BHA and BHT in fish oil, fishmeal and polyunsaturated vegetable oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
It does not volatilise at high temperature, so it remains effective in frying and cooking oils without carry-through loss. It does not discolour in contact with metal ions, which simplifies its use in light-coloured oils and premixes.
It is listed as an antioxidant under the code E319. Some countries restrict its use for specific food categories; checking the current legislation of the destination market before application is recommended.

Storage
Store in the closed original packaging in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
