BHT — Butylated Hydroxytoluene
A cost-effective, high-purity phenolic antioxidant widely used in feed, fats and premixes. It extends shelf life by delaying colour and odour deterioration.
Overview
BHT is a synthetic antioxidant that stabilises peroxy radicals by donating hydrogen from its phenolic hydroxyl group, thereby breaking the autoxidation chain in fats. In the feed industry it is used mainly in fat-supplemented compound feeds, fishmeal and fat storage.
It is insoluble in water and readily soluble in fats, hydrocarbons and alcohol. Being odourless and tasteless, it protects the end product without causing sensory change.
It is listed as an antioxidant under the code E321. When combined with BHA it shows a synergistic effect, providing longer induction periods than either compound alone.

Storage
